My earliest memories of being fascinated with porcelain figures is of travelling from garage sale to garage sale and picking up gorgeous pieces here and there for 50c or a dollar. I had quite the collection, but of course none of the little relics that I had in my childhood collection could ever compare with the gorgeous and delicate work of Kate MacDowell.
Kate’s work is a reflection of human behaviour, human nature and our impact on the world around us. It is a heady concoction of the grotesque and the gorgeous, but often confronting in its detail. Starting with solid porcelain pieces, which she hollows out to create her elegant sculptures, the more fragile components are made separately and then melded together into the final piece.
