It’s not often in our media-saturated world, which seems to foster some kind of weird attention deficit culture, that we find something that we can say is truly matchless. When we do find it though, guaranteed it will immediately pluck at our eyeballs, forcing us to absorb all the details and in a ludicrous display, spread a grin as wide as a galaxy across our faces. Then like a tractor beam it pulls you in and locks you to the screen. You’re transfixed, but you’ve found something amazing, so it’s all good, you don’t mind. This is exactly how I felt when I found the work of one Corbyn S. Kern, esquire.
When I first glanced at Corbyn’s short bio and saw that he lived in Normal, Illinois (USA) I honestly thought – hang on a darn second, that can’t be right – this guy’s work is amazing – how can he live in a town called Normal! That’s not right! But here he resides, and with a career spanning over 20 years in illustration, it’s easy to see why his work is in demand
But it was Corbyn’s obviously nerdy side that really captured my attention. His love and appreciation for pop culture, graphic novels, comics and the usual Nerdoms (Doctor Who, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Trek … I could go on!) shines through in his distinctive characterisations. Each series (such as the wonderful Doctor Who illustrations pictured here) shows a finer appreciation for detail, while still knowing when to move a little to the left and let simplicity do the talking.
